Sarah C. Kane

About Sarah

Sarah began her career at Barton as an intern and after graduating she would then join us as a full time Lighting Designer at our State College Office. She attended The Pennsylvania State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.

“Being part of an ESOP means a lot to me because it creates a sense of ownership and shared purpose. It’s motivating to know that my contributions don’t just support the company—they directly impact my own future and that of my colleagues. I appreciate that the company values its employees enough to invest in us this way, and it encourages me to think long-term. For example, this Employee Spotlight is a great opportunity for me to learn more about my colleagues that are working in other offices,” stated Sarah when asked what being part of an ESOP means to her.

Tell us a little about your family/home life.

I live in Leawood, Kansas, and life is full and happy right now. I have a 4-month-old Rottweiler puppy who keeps things fun and energetic. In my free time, I enjoy Reformer Pilates, weightlifting, and cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs—I never miss a home game!! Overall, I’m really grateful for where I am in life, both personally and professionally.

What’s your hometown?

Avon, Connecticut.

What was your first job in engineering like?

My first job in engineering is actually the one I’m currently in, and it’s been a really positive and rewarding experience so far. I’ve had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, which has helped me build a strong technical foundation. I’m learning a lot every day—not just in terms of engineering skills, but also about working effectively in a team, communicating ideas, and managing project timelines. The team is supportive, and the work environment encourages growth, so it’s been a great place to start my career.

What was the first job you got a physical paycheck?

Cart Girl at Gillette Ridge Golf Club.

What do you like most about the ESOP?

The mindset of being park owner encourages people to go the extra mile, support each other, and focus on long-term success rather than just short-term tasks. It’s also really motivating to know that as the company grows, we grow with it—not just professionally, but financially as well.

What do you love most about your job?

As a lighting designer, it is incredibly rewarding to design lighting that not only enhances the aesthetics of a space but also improves functionality, comfort, and energy efficiency. Being part of an MEP firm means I get to collaborate closely with engineers from other disciplines, which helps me design more integrated and effective solutions. Every project brings unique challenges, and I really enjoy the process of solving them while seeing the visual impact our work has on the final environment.

If I wasn’t a Lighting Designer, I’d be?

Pastry Chef.

What’s on your “stranded on a desert island” playlist?

I don’t really listen to music. However, if I could bring an iPad with Big Bang Theory loaded up, I would be happy.

TED 2 and The Silence of the Lambs.

What’s on your bucket list?

Visit the Maldives.

When I go to a cookout, I hope there’s __ to eat.

Hotdogs.

What’s your favorite holiday and why?

Christmas is my favorite time of the year because it brings out the best in people. There is a real sense of generosity, love, and cheer that’s hard to match. I love the tradition of giving and receiving presents, not just for the gifts themselves, but for the thought and care behind them. It’s a season where everyone slows down a little, connects more deeply with family and friends, and fills their homes with warmth, joy, and gratitude.

Best book you’ve ever read?

The Wealth Money Can’t Buy by Robin Sharma.
