Why did you become an engineer?
I’ve always been energized by exploring the inner-workings of complex things. Engineering will always be a vast expanse of unexplored territory.
What is the biggest misconception about engineers?
Engineers are often considered scientifically-minded people unable to understand the human element of a problem. In order to “make buildings work”, we only succeed when we enable people to work well in buildings. The human element is the primary focus of engineering.
If you could design any building, what would it be?
I would love to design a zero-energy building with a closely coordinated group of engineers and architects – a design that rethinks the age-old assumptions about how buildings work, to minimize energy use, rather than simply spending more money to generate energy on-site.
What technologies interest you the most?
Technology that solves a complex problem in a simple way is the most interesting to me. Technology that makes sense right away.
What’s your favorite quote/saying?
“Do what you can, with what you’ve got, where you are.” – Theodore Roosevelt
