About Scott

Scott has been with Barton for over 9 years, first joining Barton as an intern and then joining as a full-time Mechanical Designer at our York Office. He attended The York Technical Institute where he received an Associates in Computer Aided Drafting and Design.

“Being part of an ESOP means that the work that I do has a direct impact on the well-being of our Company, which I take pride in.” Stated Scott when asked what being part of an ESOP means to him.

Tell us a little about your family/home life.

I live in Hampstead, MD with my wife (of 11 years) Katie, our son Garrett (10), and my step-daughter Abby (16). We enjoy the company of our 2 year old dog Cooper who is a Golden Retriever, and our 3 year old cat Willow who is a Bengal. If we had only known sooner, we would have named them Tom and Gerina, as on a daily basis, they do their best to imitate “Tom and Jerry”.

What’s your hometown?

Westminster, MD.

Where did you go to college?

YTI (York Technical Institute).

What was your first job in engineering like?

My first job in engineering was for my school externship requirement. Following a class visit to that company, it was requested that I submit my resume. I was hired as a part-time employee prior to my externship, which rolled into my full-time externship program, where I did general drafting using AutoCAD and REVIT. I was hired full-time following the completion of my externship and graduation. Since that time, I was given the opportunity to train and progress into an HVAC designer role. I continue to work for Barton to this day.

What was the first job you got a physical paycheck?

I was a Sales Associate in the Men’s Department at my local Sears.

How long have you been with Barton?

I have been with Barton for 9 years.

What do you love most about your job?

I like that no two projects are ever the same and enjoy being able to see some interesting buildings that I would otherwise not be able to see. (i.e., Milton Hershey School’s “Founders Hall”)

What’s your favorite sport (professional, college, or other)?

Motorsports (NASCAR, NHRA, Road Racing) and Abby’s soccer games.

I’m seldom without?

A hat. I feel naked without one.

When I’m not at work I’m doing……

When I am not at work, I am working as a homeowner taking care of things around the house, going on hikes or camping trips with my family, or (what seems like most of my time) driving to soccer tournaments and now college tours for Abby.

What’s on your “stranded on a desert island” playlist?

Pretty much any song from Granger Smith or his alternate persona “Earl Dibbles, Jr.”.

Favorite pizza topping?

Pepperoni.

What’s the one movie you can watch over and over again?

Any of the “Top Gear” or “Grand Tour” extended tv specials.

What’s on your bucket list?

To visit Mt. Rushmore, and Yellowstone & Yosemite National Parks.

When I go to a cookout, I hope there’s __ to eat.

Bacon – To go on the burgers!

What’s your favorite holiday and why?

Christmas. After working in retail for many years and listening to Christmas music starting before Halloween, I can’t stand Christmas music anymore except for maybe a couple of days before Christmas. However, I really enjoy decorating the house with lights for anyone passing by to see. And on Christmas day, I am very fortunate to have a family that as individuals do not care what we may receive. We enjoy seeing each other get a gift that they like and just spending the day together, and that includes our kids who have surprisingly never really wanted anything “for Christmas”. Christmas for us is a day without work or school, when in a year full of sporting events, school extracurricular activities, and doctor visits, we can have a day where we are all home at the same time and can visit with extended family as well.

Best book you’ve ever read?

Flight of the Intruder by Stephen Coonts – and the 18 books in the “Jake Grafton” series that follow it.
