Renovation and Addition Transform Janet Morgan Riggs Student Center

Barton Education provided MEP design and construction services for a 26,000 square-foot addition and 48,000 square-foot renovation to the Janet Morgan Riggs Student Center at Gettysburg College.

The building houses The Bullet Hole, The Center for Career Engagement, Garthwait Leadership Center, Student Activities, Greek Life Offices as well as space for Student Senate. The existing natatorium was removed, to make room for the new addition of a foodservice operation, two story dining area, servery, student offices, coffee shop and social space.

The addition required extensive site utility relocation including campus steam and cast-in-place concrete tunnels. Both the addition and existing renovated building are served by campus steam and chilled water.

Construction was designed to be phased as the existing building remained occupied throughout construction.

Renovations in the existing building included an air handler unit, lighting and ceiling replacement. Systems in the addition included sanitary waste ad vent, domestic hot and cold water, natural gas, a 4-pipe variable air volume air handler system with hydronic control reheats, a reheat boiler, complete DDC building management system interfaced with the campus-wide system, electrical service, normal and emergency power distribution, emergency power generation, lighting and lighting controls, fire alarm, life safety, access control and tele/data.

The Janet Morgan Riggs Student Center achieved LEED Gold status from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
