Michael F. Duffy, PE

About Michael

Michael joined Barton in 2026 as a mechanical engineer at our York office. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from York College of Pennsylvania.

“What I like most about the ESOP is that it creates a genuine sense of shared ownership—everyone is invested in the success of the firm and each other. It naturally encourages a collaborative environment where people support one another, and I’ve really appreciated the mentorship that comes from more experienced colleagues who are willing to share their knowledge and help others grow. It feels less about hierarchy and more about working together to do good, meaningful work for our clients,” Michael shared when asked what he loves the most about the ESOP.

Tell us a little about your family/home life.

I live in York with my wife Amanda; our 18-month-old daughter, Catherine; and our corgi, Maxwell. My mother-in-law, Judy (aka Jude the Dude), also lives with us along with her beagle, Paisley. I came to York when I started college and have lived here since! Outside of life with a toddler, we are involved in our church out towards the Philly area where my wife grew up. There’s a lot of history there for Amanda’s family and the people have been a great village to us and Catherine.

What’s your hometown?

Baltimore, MD.

What was your first job in engineering like?

It was an MEP consulting firm. I had a broad exposure to a variety of projects in larger utility plants, distribution tunnels, commissioning, and eventually moved into the building side division. I found there that I thrived in healthcare and education environments where I can really feel like I’m making a positive impact in the world.

What was the first job you got a physical paycheck?

I worked masonry and hardscaping for a small patio and outdoor fireplace company. It was hard work but very rewarding to see the projects come together.

What does being part of an ESOP mean to you?

Being part of an ESOP means I’m not just an employee, but an owner with a stake in the firm’s long-term success. It encourages me to think beyond my individual role and focus on outcomes that benefit the whole organization.

What do you love most about your job?

Being part of the construction industry gives me a very neat insight into how buildings are built and operated. It’s like having a “backstage pass” to the world. I consider myself lucky to have contributed to the operation and efficiency of healthcare, education, and various government facilities throughout my career.

If I wasn’t a Mechanical Engineer, I’d be?

Still engineering adjacent, but I’ve always been interested in controlled demolition. I think it would be incredible to learn how to do that. Or, honestly, I’d love to be a stay-at-home dad. My daughter is my entire world.

I’m seldom without?

My family! My wife and I are so excited to show Catherine the world. We love taking her to restaurants, local farms, wherever we can find a new experience for her to have fun and learn. She loves traveling and exploring. She’s brave and a fighter and though she’s very shy around new people, she loves meeting new dogs.

Favorite pizza topping?

Chicken and pepperoni.

What’s on your “stranded on a desert island” playlist?

Okay, I love music! I listen to a variety, from oldies and classic rock newer alt rock and indie, bluegrass, americana, and pop. I love putting playlists together for different genres, moods, silly themes, or just to see what sounds good together.

What’s your hidden talent?

Spilling coffee.

What’s the one movie you can watch over and over again?

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy…. when my household isn’t in the mood for a 12hr movie marathon, we’re more into shows. Ted Lasso is our go-to.

When I go to a cookout I hope there’s __ to eat.

Crabs! I love a good crab feast.

What’s the best piece of advice that you’ve ever been given?

A quote by Howard Thurman I heard when I was young:
“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and go do that, because what the world needs is people who have come alive,”
