Call 811…So You Don’t Have to Call 911!

Before doing any excavation work on your site, you should remember three important numbers…811.   Calling 811, anywhere in the nation, will connect you to Call Before You Dig, where you can begin the process of having all of your underground public utilities marked, free of charge.

Before calling 811, be prepared to give the operator the location of your dig. You will be asked for your address, the street names of the nearest intersection and a second intersection, as well as a brief description of the nature of the work.  At the end of the call, you will be given a job number which you should include in all documents associated with your site work.

All of the public utilities that have underground lines within the area of your excavation will then be notified.  Representatives will visit the site to locate and identify their lines using color-coded markers.  Typically, the entire process takes about one week, so plan ahead.
