Joseph Pawell Wins IES Illumination Award

We are pleased to announce that Joseph Pawell of our State College office has received a 2017, Philadelphia Section, Philaments IES Illumination Award for the lighting design at Penn State’s Morgan Academic Center at University Park, PA.

The Illuminating Engineering Society’s Illumination Awards recognize projects for their ingenuity and originality, as well as their contributions to the lighting design industry. Mr. Pawell holds the position of Senior Electrical Designer with over three decades of experience in electrical systems and lighting design.

“Designing the lighting for the conversion of the former Greenberg Ice Arena into an Academic Achievement and Study Center presented many complexities. Much of the building is below grade with limited floor-to-floor height, so the space could easily be a gloomy and unwelcoming cave! The facility had to appeal to all athletes as well, so cues were taken from all sports genres; Linear fixtures were installed above ‘lane markers’ in the carpets; Square fixtures were installed above ‘coaching box’ reception desks and the light fixtures for the graphics in the main gathering room were inspired by sports field lighting towers.”

Barton is proud to have been part of the design team that successfully collaborated with Hoffman Leakey Architects, LLC, Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics, Penn State’s Office of the Physical Plant, Morgan Academic Center Staff, and P.J. Dick Construction to deliver this project for the University. Morgan Academic Center staff report that the facility has become one of the most popular and well used study centers on the Penn State University Park campus.
