IES Philadelphia Section: 2023 Section Award for Interior Lighting Design
Penn State Health Children’s Lancaster Pediatric Center- Lancaster, PA
This new 46,000 square-foot Outpatient Healthcare Facility, previously an abandoned Toys “R” Us store, has found new life by welcoming children into its doors once more – this time bringing comfort, relief, and welcome distractions to the children experiencing anxiety and seeking care. The design team was challenged to create a lighting design that would accentuate the unique skylight feature and graphic wall art, while aiding in wayfinding and create a healthcare space that met design parameters for sustainability, comfort, safety, and function.

Children entering this urban healthcare facility will experience a newly renovated 29,000 square-foot space built specifically with them in mind. From the moment they step inside, children are welcomed by the playful, colorful, and interactive lighting design throughout the facility creates interest and highlights a strong connection to nature, with twinkling stars in a play alcove, billowy clouds overhead, and a rainbow of multicolored downlights in the patient corridors.  The lighting helps to establish a fun atmosphere full of positive distractions for the kids, as well as the functional light needed for healthcare staff to administer their care.
