2026 Summer Intern Spotlight – June

Get to know the talented student interns gaining hands-on experience at Barton this summer. From engineering and architectural lighting design to field experience and mentorship, these future professionals are building valuable skills while contributing to real-world projects across our offices.

What school do you attend and in what year are you in the course of study?
I’m going into my second year of electrical engineering at Wilkes University.

What made you decide to study your major, and has that changed since you started college?
I decided to study electrical engineering because I always thought electricity was interesting and I wanted to learn more about it. Since starting college and my internship at Barton, I’ve realized how much I enjoy the field and hope to continue pursuing it.

What kind of classes or projects have you enjoyed the most so far in college?
So far, I’ve really enjoyed Circuit Analysis, partially because it’s the only major specific class I’ve experienced thus far. It was very exciting to finally start getting into my major and learning more about it!

What made you interested in interning at Barton?
I was interested in interning at Barton because they worked with architectural engineering. I came from a technical high school where I studied architecture, so combining the architectural knowledge I had with what I was going to learn about engineering sounded really appealing.

Who has been your mentor at Barton?
Marlena.

What are you most hoping to get out of this internship by the end of the summer?
I’m hoping to come out of this internship with as much knowledge as I can. I want to learn about the industry, my major, and the other closely related professions that we interact with.

If you could spend a day shadowing anyone in the company, what person or position would you choose and why?
I would choose to shadow an electrical engineer. My ultimate goal is to become a licensed engineer, so I would want to shadow someone in that position to see what their workday looks like.

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you for which they would be surprised?
One thing that most people are surprised to learn about me is that I really enjoy longboarding.

What’s your favorite way to spend a weekend?
My favorite way to spend a weekend is playing volleyball, longboarding, or playing video games.

What school do you attend and in what year are you in the course of study?

I’m entering my fourth year of Architectural Engineering at Penn State University.

What made you decide to study your major, and has that changed since you started college?

I’ve always enjoyed architecture and building design, but I also wanted the math and science that come with engineering. After a few months in the program, I chose the lighting/electrical option. I enjoy lighting design because it affects how people feel within a space, and I’m a people-oriented person.

What kind of classes or projects have you enjoyed the most so far in college?

I usually find something interesting in each of my classes. My top three favorites have been Acoustics, Lighting Controls, and Architecture Studio. Each included group design projects that allowed us to apply what we were learning, which helped me better understand the concepts and identify areas where I could improve.

What made you interested in interning at Barton?

I was told that I would be challenged and encouraged to grow instead of working on markups all summer.

Who has been your mentor at Barton?

Shawn Good.

What are you most hoping to get out of this internship by the end of the summer?

I’m hoping to gain enough field experience to be able to go back to school and understand how what I’m learning applies to real projects.

If you could spend a day shadowing anyone in the company, what person or position would you choose and why?

I would like to shadow a principal to see the difference between design and management. I haven’t decided if I would like to be in an upper management position.

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you for which they would be surprised?

Most people don’t know that I have five dogs, all of whom I consider my best friends.

What’s your favorite way to spend a weekend?

My favorite way to spend a weekend is traveling. It could be to visit friends, going to the beach, or walking around a city. I like to be in different environments, rather than staying at home.
