Solebury School’s New Passive House is one of PA’s First Phius Certification Dormitory
Barton Education provided MEP, architectural lighting design and fire protection services for a new 3-story, 16,000 square-foot, 32-bed dormitory named Hope Hall, common space and 4 faculty apartments for Solebury School.
The new building was built to Passive House standards and designed to be as energy-efficient as possible. It’s among the first residence halls in Pennsylvania, and in the U.S. to employ these technologies.
The project included full fire protection, a water source heat pump domestic water heater, water source VRF with DOAS HVAC system with an air source heat pump boiler, lighting and lighting controls.
The PHIUS design focused on reducing heating and cooling energy through passive measures. MEP systems needed to meet stringent, climate-specific target energy values. Additional PHIUS measures included EV charging stations and infrastructure for dorm to be solar PV-ready.
